Mustang

Day 01  – Kathmandu. Arrival at Kathmandu (1300m). Transfer to a comfortable hotel. A few formalities for the trekking permit at our arrival.

Day 02 – Kathmandu – Pokhara.

In the afternoon transfer to the national airport. A 30mn flight to Pokhara. Transfer to hotel

Day 03 -  Flight Pokhara – Jomosom (2700m) Kagbeni (2800m). 3h.. We wake up early because the Jomosom flights start early in the morning, depending upon the weather conditions. At Jomosom we have to register nearby the local authorities for our trip to the Mustang. We definitely enter an other world and the gusts of wind are reminding us. Between Jomosom and Kagbeni the game consists in searching the famous black stones which contain the Kali Gandaki famous seafossils (40 million years old). Kagbeni is a surprising stronghold village closing the Mustang valley. Camp nearby.

Day 04 – Kagbeni – Chaile (3050m). 4h30.

This morning we pass the Kagbeni “restricted area” board and enter the Mustang. After a 3h walk we reach Tangbe, a small village but very wonderful. A 1h visit for  discovering the stronghold remains and loosing its way in the alleys maze. In 2h  we go on towards Chaile our campsite place. We visit  that fortified place made of  3 distinct villages.

Day 05  – Chaile – Syangmochen  (3800m). 6h30.

We have to go along the Kali Gandaki, called now the Mustang Khola, till a recent bridge we cross. Way up to Chele. The village is clean, very inward looking and perched on a place which allows the checking of all the valley  movements. We already can feel the change of ethnic groups and customs. Then the trail goes up on a small plateau, closed by a  surprising bottleneck of stone penitents. View of Gyagar, a wall-surrounded village. The cut through the rock steps and steepy staircase trail  now overlooks the gorge. Arrival at a first pass at around 3530m, where the Damodar Himal chain is revealed. Drop to Samar, a typical village with poplars, a good irrigation system and friendly people. Campsite near the village.

Day 06 – Ghami  ( 3490m) via  Geling (3520m) 6h

Two trails are leading to Geling: the simplest one on the hillside takes 4h. The other one follows the “pilgrims trail” and takes more time. We will take it. At first a steepy drop into a canyon will lead us to an other world… here we will find a holy cave fervently venerated by the inhabitants (especially a chorten shaped stalactite). Way up across an other canyon, spectacular too, till Shyangmochen (3700m) where we rejoin the main trail. After crossing an other  short pass (3860m), it’s the last drop to Geling (3520m), and Geling monastery visit. According to Peissel, Geling is “the Mustang gate”. Way up to a pass at around 4395m. Drop to Gemi hamlet, an other great place where we have a lunch in a village house.   Around that village there are numeral remarkable points we can visit too, such as the big chorten at the beginning way from Gemi.

Day 07l – Tsarang – Lo Gekar

On the way out of Tsarang we pass nearby a turbin which provides electricity to the village. Several mills work on that torrent and a big chorten marks the way out of the village. Many troglodytes settlements are towering us. A dry valley, which progressively becomes greener, leads us to a pass where prayer flags are flapping at 3870m.

Day 08 -Lo Manthang  (3,730m) – We continue up  to the  Chogo La pass and overlook to Lo Manthang village. 4 -5 h      Day 09  – Lo Manthang and around.

Generally, the King honours us with his presence if we request an audience. We will pay hommage to him while drinking a salt and butter tea. Camp at the same place for two nights.

Whatever the mood of the authorities, there are numeral hikes around Lo Manthang, amidst barley, mustard and buckwheat fields. We  will also enjoy walking along the narrow streets of that ancient town and watching the people having a chat on the Royal Palace square. Otherwise, old monasteries have very nice paintings to watch too.

Day 10 – Lo Manthang – Dhie (3360m). 4h. ( if time enough then hike to Luri Gompa & return 6- 7 h)

We again cross the pass over Lo Manthang then we go left side. The trail goes upstream a valley next to the Mustang Khola. Some tricky sections to cross, then a short pass, steepy at the end, crossing before dropping amidst fairy chimneys. On the way out we overlook Dhie. The drop, still steepy, ends in a lunar atmosphere. Campsite at Dhie.

Day 11 – Dhie – Tange (3320m). 6h.

At first the trail drops to the Ghechang Khola at around 3350m, then again goes up till 3800m before dropping again! Campsite near Tange. Visit of that remote village with a remarkable architecture, especially its wonderful chortens line.

Day 12 – Tange – Tetang (3050m). 7h.

It’s a long day today because as often in Nepal, there are switchbacks! Firstly an horizontal trail till the torrent, then it steeply rises to 4100m. We have a 3h “level” nepaleese walk and we drop to Tange, uphill from Chhuksang. Tange is a fortified village which slowly dies out cause of a water problem not flowing till the village. Campsite nearby. A great moment of that trekking amidst a titanic atmosphere.

Day 13 – Tetang – Jomsom  8h.

An easy 3h 30 way up to a pass leading to Muktinath. After having crossed that pass we leave Mustang. Muktinath sanctuary visit. Campsite nearby.
